Key definitions
- Sample type: a template that describes the kind of sample, including which information (metadata fields) must be recorded. Example: ‘Plasmids’ or ‘Cell line’.
- Sample: an actual instance of a sample type, representing the physical item in your lab. Example: the specific plasmid prep you made on 5 Sept 2025.
- Storage unit: a physical location (e.g., freezer, cupboard, room) that contains compartments (drawers, shelves, …) and sample containers (boxes, well plates, …).
- Inventory Browser: a visual representation of your lab’s storage structure.
Sample types and storage units are usually configured by the group admin, or in collaboration with the group admin.
